Lighting Up History: Midwest Oilers Celebrate a Century on the Field

October 21, 2025

On November 19, 1925, the Midwest Yellow Dogs (former team name) took the field against Casper High School (NCHS) at Moses Field, making history under the glow of floodlights generously provided by the Midwest Refinery Company.

The Midwest Oil Company lit up Moses Field with 18 powerful floodlights and a swinging searchlight from atop an oil derrick, drawing nearly 1,000 fans to watch the legendary game. A century later, this community pride still shines bright, as students, families, and alumni came together to honor the moment that contributed to football history.

During a special halftime ceremony during the home football game, former players, coaches, and officials were invited to the field to join current Oilers in a reenactment of the original 1925 team photo, using the same historic game ball, carefully preserved thanks to Mr. Everett Dewitt and the Salt Creek Museum.

The event also included the unveiling of commemorative signage created by teacher Mr. Fulkerson and the Midwest welding students. One sign will remain on the concession stand, while another will be placed under the oil derrick in front of the school, serving as a permanent reminder of Midwest’s place in football history.

The games are an exciting way to bring the community together to support students, shared Principal Brainard, “For 100 years, football under the lights at Midwest School has been something special. If I had to guess, 70% of Midwest and Edgerton residents come to the football games. We kicked it all off with the first-ever lighted football game in America, and ever since, those lights have been shining on generations of pride, tradition, and unforgettable moments. GO OILERS!”

Thank you to the Midwest staff, students, parents, coaches, alumni, community members, the Salt Creek Museum, and all those who contributed to this exceptional celebration.
