Throughout the year, members engage in various activities that promote growth, excellence, and learning. From organizing cultural events and celebrations, such as Hispanic Heritage Month and Día de los Muertos, to participating in community service projects that connect language skills with real-world impact, members exemplify the values of service, excellence, and connection. With a focus on academic achievement, leadership, and cultural engagement and appreciation, the Kelly Walsh Spanish Honor Society students develop their Spanish proficiency, expand their global perspective, and make lasting contributions to both their school and global community.
Earlier this year, students from the Kelly Walsh High School Spanish Honor Society showcased their creativity and language skills by participating in Día de los Muertos at the Nicolaysen Art Museum. They created an ofrenda honoring Gabriela Mistral, a Chilean poet and diplomat, and also helped the NIC run activities during the two-day event. In November, they partnered with Kelly Walsh ELL and Heritage students to visit elementary schools. Some of the books were written by published authors, while others were original creations crafted by the students themselves. Engaging with younger students to share her love of learning was a highlight of the year for junior Martha Harris. “One of my favorite things this year has been that we went to a bunch of elementary schools, some of which were dual language classrooms. We read Spanish books to them, and some of us created our own books to share. And I think it was a really cool experience to try to influence the younger kids to learn about Spanish, the culture, and language. I think it's just really cool to be a part of not only learning the language, but also the culture itself and sharing that with other people.”
Focusing on community service and Spanish education, students participated in meaningful service projects that aimed to help Central and South American communities and celebrate Spanish and Hispanic culture. Students completed a variety of activities throughout the year, including a bake sale that raised funds for the Rainforest Foundation US to support indigenous communities living in the rainforest. With the Pulsera Project, another hallmark effort, students sold bracelets crafted by artisans in Guatemala and Nicaragua. With the money raised from Pulsera sales, the Pulsera Project Foundation funds a wide range of social impact programs that empower people through secondary education, university scholarships, housing programs, healthcare, disability rights advocacy, women's and youth leadership, and funding for environmental initiatives.
For senior Hayden Mayfield, the Spanish Honor Society engages students in broadening their cultural understanding, service, and leadership. “It’s just a really incredible opportunity to share with others the importance of community service, cultural impact, and community integration. It's honestly an amazing program where we're able to volunteer, we're able to donate to the community, give back to others, while prioritizing Spanish education and enlightening others about the community and how to help others in South America and other Spanish-speaking countries.”
Kelly Walsh High School is committed to preparing all students for their next step by creating high expectations, academic rigor, and personal responsibility.
