NCSD Homeless Education Liaison Awarded Adventure West Council's Distinguished Citizen Award!

Congratulations to Greta Spencer, who was recently awarded the Boy Scouts Adventure West Council's Distinguished Citizen Award!

Below is the press release from the Adventure West Council:

The Adventure West Council, Boy Scouts of America hosted the 11th annual Strength of America Banquet, presented by First Interstate Bank on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Ramkota Hotel in Casper.  Greta Spencer received the Adventure West Council’s Distinguished Citizen Award on Friday.   The local Scouting committee has raised to date over $35,000, to support Scouting here in Wyoming for the Adventure West Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Greta Spencer is a native of Indiana but moved West in 1980 to attend the University of Wyoming where she studied Education. She has been a teacher for 32 years, teaching elementary in Title I schools for 9 years before she started Wyoming’s first McKinney-Vento Program (Homeless Education) for Natrona County School District #1. She has been working with homeless students ages 4-21 for the last 23 years. These most at risk students are her passion. With guidance and support, she has seen many students flourish and reach goals they never thought possible.

Greta is a mother to three adult children, Rachel, Allison, and Karl. She is GG to five beautiful grandchildren, Emersyn (9), Barrett (7), twins Maddox and Beckett (4), and baby Teagan (18 months). They bring her great joy.

She loves to be outside enjoying our beautiful state or traveling to discover new places. Greta has two dogs, Einstein and Finnegan. Finnegan is a therapy dog and goes to school with her every day to work with her students. The kids at Unaccompanied Students Initiative (USI) enjoy when Finnegan visits the youth house. Finnegan and Greta also volunteer at Hospice. She is a member of Rotary (past President), active in her church, and enjoys volunteering at the USI youth house.

We honor Greta Spencer as the 2022 Adventure West Council Casper Distinguished Citizen of the Year.  She is a true leader in our community and no award can truly recognize her dedication to the youth of Natrona County.  “We would not be successful in serving youth without steadfast community support.  That is what we teach in Scouting, to become good citizens and give back to your community,” stated, John L. Coleman, Jr., Scout Executive/CEO.

The Strength of America Banquet fundraising event supports the Adventure West Council to provide programs to over 700 youth in Central and Northern Wyoming.  The Adventure West Council, Boy Scouts of America serves almost 5,000 young men and women in northern Colorado, Wyoming, and western Nebraska.
