Woods Learning Center Students and Staff Collaborate and Volunteer with Community Agencies as Part of Annual Have a Heart Day

Throughout the morning, students and staff spent time giving back to organizations in our community while encouraging acts of kindness in honor of Kindness Week. This yearly event is something students and staff look forward to each year as it provides an opportunity for students of all grade levels to learn from one another while giving back to organizations in our community.

At Wyoming Food For Thought, students helped prepare weekend food bags and made newspaper pots for WFFT. These paper pots are filled with soil and used to start seeds for gardening. Once sprouted, the paper pot will be planted in the ground where the paper will biodegrade, and the plant can grow.  Wyoming Food for Thought Project is a local non-profit organization dedicated to combating childhood hunger within our community. The Food for Thought Food Bag Program is a year-round program that provides children with breakfast, lunch, and dinner items for every day they are out of school.

Students spent time at Rescued Treasures, helping to organize and sort items for the store. Rescued Treasures proceeds and sales help fund the Wyoming Rescue Mission’s shelter and programs.  Later in the day, students went to the Wyoming Rescue Mission, where they prepared and served meals for guests. Since 1978 Wyoming Rescue Mission has welcomed anyone from the community in need of refuge, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Meals On Wheels representatives visited Woods Learning Center, where students and staff creatively designed festive St. Patrick’s Day placemats and cards to add a little bit of celebration when sent out with meals. Natrona County Meals on Wheels is a senior meal program. They prepare and deliver nutritious meals to elderly and homebound people in Natrona County.

Jason’s Friends Foundation also stopped by Woods Learning Center for a morning of creative fun. Jason’s Friends Foundation assists Wyoming families with children from birth through the age of 20 diagnosed with cancer, brain tumors, or spinal cord tumors. They provide support with non-medical financial assistance, advocacy, and encouragement. Students and staff at WLC spent the morning decorating cards and posters for children supported by Jason’s Friends with the hope of spreading a little bit of kindness and encouragement.

At Restoration Church Food Pantry, students volunteered their time to assist in organizing food items for those in our community. The Restoration Food Panty services individuals and families throughout our community in many different situations.

Downtown a little further, students stopped by the Make-A-Wish offices, where they spent time coloring puzzles and writing letters of encouragement for the children who Make-A-Wish Wyoming is working to grant wishes. Make-A-Wish Wyoming grants a wish to children in the state who have been diagnosed with a critical illness.

At the Salvation Army Hope Center, students volunteered to stock shelves with donated food items for those in our community. Members of the community needing meal assistance are able to get a hot breakfast each weekday morning as well as shop the Food By Choice pantry at the Salvation Army Hope Center.

Throughout the morning, students, staff, and community agencies shared their time, creative talents, hard work, and resources to encourage kindness, community service, and the importance of supporting others.

Brenna, a 5th-grade student at WLC, shared her thoughts on the day, “I’ve always known if you do good things, it always has a way of coming back to you. But it is just important to do good things anyway. Spending time with my friends and class was great today as we helped others.”
