Degrees: I have my BS in Elem. Educ. with a science minor from Chadron State and a Masters in Technology in Education from Leslie University.
How you came to teach at Poison: Tammy was desperate and hired me. (he, he, he) Actually, I was looking to move buildings, saw the opening for LA at Poison Spider and sent Tammy my resume and letter of interest. I had been working collaborating with LA staff at CY for almost all of my tech assignments, as I feel reading and writing are ultra important. Luckily, Tammy and the interview panel offered me the position.
Why is PSS Unique: I love the close-knit community feel. It's wonderful to be able to get to know our kids and their families so well.
Extracurricular subjects you provides for students at PSS: Drama, as I am the Queen, Homework Lab, and Yearbook. I would like to have a computer club this year, too! After helping multiple kiddos with their website for History Day, I feel this might be a club of interest to them.
Why do you provide the extracurricular subjects you do? Because we have such a small staff, I believe we all need to pitch in so our kids have as many of the same opportunities as they would have in the larger town schools. If that means I sponsor several clubs/activities, that's what I'll do. Our kids deserve it!!!!
What is it about teaching that excites you? Seeing a kid who has struggled to understand a concept suddenly light up with that beam of "I got it" is the most rewarding experience. Also, being there for kids when they need someone to be a friend, a shoulder to cry on or just a hug. Our kids know we care about THEM as young people, not just as students and what they learn academically.
One of the important things you do for your students: I try really hard to be fair and understanding with kids. I want them to know that I do really, really care about them.
One of the important things we do as a staff for the community of students at PSS: Care for our kiddos!
Why you chose to become a teacher: I just always knew that I would be a teacher; it seemed to be part of who I am from the time I can remember being able to help others. (Mom might say it's because I'm inherently bossy. :o)
Number of siblings: I have two living siblings, Ronica is 42 and Carrie is 32. My brother Chris was killed at the age of 15 in a car wreck when I was 13.
Where your parents live: My parents are snowbirds. They live here in the summer and New Orleans doing Katrina rebuilding in the winter. This winter they are thinking about going to Texas in lieu of NO; there's a little town trying to build a church and cannot afford skilled workers.
Number of children: I have two beautiful children, Aurora is six and will begin first grade. Brody is five and will begin Kindergarten this year. They are both lucky to have two wonderful teachers !!!!
Pets: Two. Phil, aka my husband, and Lacey, our 9 y.o. Doberman.
Hobbies, things you do for fun outside of the school day: I don't have a life, remember? I scrapbook, read "Romance" and play with my horses, Dreamer and Murphy.
What values you hope your students taken away from your classroom: To continue to be open to new knowledge, new ideas and new friends.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer! Can't wait to get caught up on your great vacations and happenings!
