About our school
CY Junior High offers Interdisciplinary CORE teams, which allow for the creation of smaller learning communities. These communities help students transition from elementary to middle school and increase home-school communication. They allow teams of teachers to be more responsive to the needs of young adolescents and help students become more connected to the school through their team.
In addition to creating a safe, caring and engaging environment, academic rigor is a primary focus of all students. CY offers the Summit Program, which is designed for the high-achieving middle school student. CY students also enjoy and excel in the full complement of athletics and other cocurricular activities.
A few bits of trivia about the school: CY, the home of the Cyclones, is named for the famous cattle brand used by early Wyoming pioneer rancher J.M. Carey. The school is looking forward to new prospects, with a new 130,000-square-foot building currently being sited and designed. Staff and students are tentatively scheduled to move into their new home in 2010.
Our staff
CY students learn from 55 highly qualified teachers, including a well-balanced blend of veterans and new teaching professionals. Students also have access to academic tutors, a nurse, a school guidance counselor, a Central Wyoming Counseling Center counselor and a social worker.
Our curriculum
CY sixth- through eighth-graders study the Connected Math program, while ninth-graders study Math Connections. Students also learn the 6+1 Traits of Writing program to enhance their reading and writing skills, while studying the Reading Counts program and writing regularly in all subjects.
Science and social studies are taught through standards-based curriculum programs that use a variety of materials and resources to pique students’ interests.
Students also have access to the CY Summit Program, designed to challenge academic high achievers.Other classes are available in wood technology, metal technology, digital photography, computer applications, orchestra, jazz band, vocal music, flute choir, band, art, Spanish, French, ROTC, agriculture and drama.
Special education students are served through their individual education plans, which are managed through a case manager who maintains close communication with parents. CY also is home for two Behavior and Social Skills classrooms.
Our activities
Classes at CY run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sixth-graders may go directly to lockers and first-period classrooms starting at 7:15 a.m. Seventh- through ninth-graders may study in the library or visit quietly in the cafeteria between 7 and 7:50 a.m. Seventh-graders may move to lockers and classes at 7:45 a.m. Eighth- and ninth-graders are released to the hallway and their classes at 7:50 a.m. Sixth- and seventh-grade students also are dismissed from classes five minutes earlier than older students to move to their lockers, busses or other transportation.
All students are encouraged to take advantage of the morning “JOLT” (Join Our Learning Team) from 7 to 7:45 each morning for help on homework and organizational skills.
CY also provides daily after-school help through an extended day program for students who are not making adequate academic progress. Individual classroom teachers and tutors also work with students before and after school.
Extracurricular activities for CY students include yearbook, art club, cheerleading, chess club, flute choir, French club, geography club, jazz band, math club, national Junior Honor Society, robotics, science club, Spanish club, spelling club, stock market club and student council. Meetings for these activities are scheduled before and after school hours.
Our families
The CY Parents Connections advisory team meets for lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. once a month. The Cyclone Parent Athletic Booster Club provides support for student athletes. CORE teams provide regular opportunities for parent involvement.
Parents also play key roles in activities such as the quarterly honor roll breakfast, student awards celebrations and athletic assemblies.
