About our school
Grant School provides students with meaningful experiences in a safe environment that encourages critical thinking, effective and responsible use of technology and a lifelong love of learning. The school works to help students develop a positive self-concept that promotes responsibility, creativity and respect for individuality to optimize success.
Our staff
Students at Grant learn from 21 highly qualified teachers. More than half of these teachers have more than 10 years of experience, and one teacher has earned National Board Certification. Students also have access to Title I reading and math specialists, a counselor and a social worker.
Our curriculum
Students at Grant will begin a new math program, Everyday Math, in 2007-08. The program is aligned to state standards and offers students an opportunity to work collaboratively and creatively to solve math problems in interactive situations.
Grant is a Reading First school. In reading, students study all types of literature and read in small, ability-level groups to improve their skills.
Students also write daily using the 6+1 Traits of Writing program in every subject area.
Students have regular math, art and PE classes, as well as access to a Gifted and Talented program.
The needs of special education students are addressed through their individual education plans. Grant makes an effort to address special education students’ needs in the regular education setting, and those in need of more specialized instruction are pulled to the resource room.
Summer school also is available for students.
Grant also offers a preschool for students ages 3 to 5, based on academic and economic needs.
Our activities
Classes at Grant run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A breakfast program begins at 7:45 a.m., and various tutoring is available before and after school. A homework club meets from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Students also may participate in Spanish, chess and spelling clubs, as well as fifth-grade volleyball and basketball.
Grant also regularly welcomes the Missoula Children’s Theater, hosts a spring roller skating party and offers monthly enrichment days for students.
Our families
As part of Grant’s Title I program, parents sign a compact that asks them to communicate with and support the school and staff. Families also are asked to make sure children attend school regularly, arrive on time and complete homework as assigned. Parents are strongly encouraged to talk with their children daily about school, to encourage them with praise and to ask them questions about their reading. Finally, families are expected to attend conferences and school functions to show their child they support what is happening at school.
A Parent-Teacher Association meets monthly to support students, staff and parents of Grant School. The PTA sponsors a variety of family activities throughout the year, including an annual carnival and family reading and math nights.
