School Description:

Bar Nunn Elementary School is located in the small community of Bar Nunn, just north of Casper. In the past few years, community development has resulted in a population increase, and the school is in line to receive an addition to its building to accommodate the growth in enrollment.

Bar Nunn is a “Success For All” school. To quote one of the authors of Success For All, Bar Nunn “maintains a relentless focus on the success of every child. Success comes from coordinating human resources around a well-defined goal, constantly assessing progress toward that goal and never giving up until success is achieved.”

At Bar Nunn, Success for All is a schoolwide, coordinated and proactive plan for translating positive expectations into concrete success for all children.

The school also works to provide an atmosphere that will create in the student a desirable attitude toward learning and to develop a respect and appreciate for work well done. The students of Bar Nunn elementary School deserve the best, and they, in turn, are expected to give their best. Parents also have a valuable role to play in the encouragement and support they lend to their children and the school. Bar Nunn welcomes parent volunteers and visitors.

Families:

The Bar Nunn Parent Teacher Association (PTA) provides assistance and programs that benefit our students and our school. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings. We hope everyone will join and become active in the Bar Nunn PTA. Our PTA pays for the cost of only $3 per family. So all you do is sign up. The PTA hosts activities such as the carnival, popcorn sales and Valentine's Cake Raffle.

Parents also are encouraged to be involved with their child's schooling. Students are expected to read 20 minutes per night with confirmation from parents. In addition, parents are invited to visit and participate in classrooms, school activities and family reading and math nights. Parents of preschoolers at Bar Nunn are expected to volunteer in the preschool program.

Weekly information packets will be sent home to parents on Thursdays.

The curriculum at Bar Nunn is based on the best available knowledge concerning learning, child psychology and the concept of general education. To help children achieve the standards, Bar Nunn is implementing Success For All reading and Math Wings programs.

The reading program uses a curriculum based on effective practices in beginning reading and an appropriate use of cooperate learning. Student progress is reviewed every eight weeks. The program also provides reading tutors, preschool and kindergarten components and a Family Support team.

The Math Wings program uses a constructivist mathematics approach.

The school’s language arts instruction consists of the 6+1 Traits of Writing, spelling and the Houghton Mifflin language series.

Bar Nunn also teaches “Getting Along Together” skills, Boys Town Social Skills and the Positive Behavior Intervention Support System to facilitate positive peer and adult interactions.

Bar Nunn also is home to two half-day preschool programs, which align with other building programs. Preschoolers must be 3 by Sept. 15. Admission is based on screening for pre-academic skills, followed by a staff assessment of student need.

Bar Nunn students may participate in Lego League, Spelling Bee, Science/Social Studies Club, Student Council, Homework Lab, and Reading Lab.

Fifth- and sixth-graders may participate in district basketball and volleyball.

A reading and homework lab is open before school starting at 8 a.m. and after school from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Playground supervision also is available starting at 8:15 a.m. Buses can take students to Boys and Girls Club locations after school.

Breakfast is served before school.

Special education programs are available for those students who show a need according to local, state, and federal guidelines. Bar Nunn has one resource room for those students who meet the criteria. In addition, Bar Nunn has two specialized district Behavior and Social Skills classrooms for students with behavior problems that interfere with their learning.

Students have access to tutors in reading and math. The school also offers services from a social worker, speech/language pathologist, nurse, Central Wyoming Counseling Center counselor and other therapists.
