Cottonwood, Poison Spider schools break ground

The Natrona County School District broke ground last month on its two newest school construction projects. Work will begin this month at Cottonwood Elementary School and Poison Spider School.

Cottonwood, which is going up on the site of the former McKinley Elementary School, will house the combination McKinley-Westwood School. The three-unit K-5 elementary building will be two stories and will have room for about 300 students.

Poison Spider's replacement school is being built beside the existing school. The new school will have room for about 240 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Both Cottonwood and Poison Spider are expected to open in late 2008. They are the second and third brand-new school buildings constructed with state funding through the Wyoming School Facilities Commission.

The first all-new school building, Fort Caspar Academy, also is progressing. Foundations are nearly complete, and walls are going up in some sections of the building. Crews also are working on roof joists, decking, mechanical/electrical/plumbing rough-ins and storm sewers. The school is expected to open in the fall.

Elsewhere in the district:

* Remodeling work is wrapping up at the Central Services Facility. The final of three phases of remodeling involved installing new HVAC, painting and upgrading technology in the multipurpose board room.

* Design work is under way for a new CY Middle School. Architects are working with the district and school staff to discuss needs for the building, which is tentatively scheduled to open in the fall of 2010.

* Design is scheduled to start this fall on a new Evansville Elementary School, which is tentatively scheduled to open in the fall of 2009.

* Site selection is under way for a combination Mills-Mountain View Elementary School, and design is scheduled to start this fall. The school is tentatively scheduled to open in the fall of 2009.
