SERVING PRESCHOOL - FIFTH GRADE

Students may begin attending Evansville as early as preschool, with the school's nationally accredited preschool program. Two sessions are held daily, with a certified teacher and a full-time instructional assistant who works closely with teachers and parents. Students at the preschool take part in fun, educational activities while also studying prereading and math lessons to prepare for kindergarten.
Older students at the school study math for 90 minutes a day through the activity-based Bridges program. Reading is taught for 2 1/2 hours a day in first through fifth grade and one hour a day in kindergarten, using the Balanced Literacy and Literacy First programs, which include strong emphasis on phonics and reading fluency. Students also use the Making Meaning program, in which they read books at their reading level and study comprehension. The 6 + 1 Traits of Writing program makes writing a priority in every class.
Students regularly have PE, art and music classes. A Young Writers Day allows students to publish and read their work publicly. Fourth-graders travel to Fort Laramie and the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center.
The school also uses a positive behavior program, rewarding students every nine weeks for good behavior in the classroom.
Special education students participate in regular classroom activities whenever possible, and their resource teacher is trained in the school’s math and reading programs.

Bridges in Mathematics is a full elementary school curriculum that provides the tools, strategies, materials teachers need to implement the NCTM standards.
Developed with initial support from the National Science Foundation, Bridges offers a unique blend of problem solving and skill building in a clearly articulated program that moves through each grade level with common models, teaching strategies, and objectives.
A Bridges classroom features a combination of whole-group, small-group, and independent activities. Lessons incorporate increasingly complex visual models - seeing, touching, working with manipulatives, and sketching ideas - to create pictures in the mind's eye that helps learners invent, understand, and remember mathematical ideas. By encouraging students to explore, test, and justify their reasoning, the curriculum facilitates the development of mathematical thinking.
Written and field-tested by teachers, Bridges reflects an intimate understanding of the classroom environment. Designed for use in diverse settings, the curriculum provides multiple access points allowing teachers to adapt to the needs, strengths, and interests of individual students.

Making Meaning is our Comprehension program here at Evansville.  It is a systematic comprehension program which spirals through all grade levels.  The Making Meaning program couples the latest research in reading comprehension with social development strategies that encourage students' growth as caring and honest members of the classroom community.  Reading comprehension strategies are taught directly through read-aloud experiences.  The students learn to use these strategies to make sense of their own reading through guided and independent strategy practice.

The 6+1 Trait® Writing Model of Instruction & Assessment is a powerful structure designed to help teachers use a common language to talk about the characteristics of writing as well as form a common vision of what good writing looks like. Students like the model because it guides them in identifying areas of strength and weakness as they continue to improve their writing.
