PAWS ROUND 2
Monday, March 26, 2007, is the date for the beginning of the second session of PAWS.  Students who scored proficient or advanced on the subtests will not be required to take the test subtests again.  They will remain in their classes and will continue to learn.  Students who did not score proficient or advanced on particular subtests, will be expected to take those subtests again.  Science has now been added to the test for the spring testing window.  All 9th graders will take PAWS during the spring window; they were not tested in January.  Students who did score proficient or advanced, but would like to take the test a second time will be scheduled during the make-up testing window in April.  The make-up testing window for grades 6, 7, and 9 begins on April 10.  The make-up window for grade 8 begins on April 13.  If your child would like to test again, please contact the Centennial Guidance Office.

SCHOOL PLAY
A talented cast of 6th through 8th graders will perform Centennial’s spring play, Anne Frank and Me on May 4 and May 5 at 7:00 P.M. in the Centennial cafeteria.  Mrs. Smith, the director, is looking forward to producing this play that she first directed at Centennial in 2000.  “I love this show.  The script is so well written -- full of laughter and tears.  Also, students will learn a lot about the Holocaust and what it might have been like to be living as a Jewish citizen in Paris in the 1940’s.  The best part is that I have a group of student actors and actresses who show amazing promise even though we are only a week into rehearsals.  I’m having such fun that I lose track of time in our rehearsals.”  Make plans now to attend this evening of special entertainment and drama.
*Parents of cast members:  Remember that you can track the rehearsal calendar on the Centennial website - http://natronaschools.org/centennial

ONE DAY SALE
GET YOUR YEARBOOK!
The next “One Day Sale” on Centennial yearbooks will be Wednesday, March 28.  For one day only students can purchase a yearbook for only $20.00.  That’s $5.00 off the end of the year price.  If paying with a check, please make it out to Centennial Jr. High School.

KEEP THEM HEALTHY!
Each Friday in March there are clinics for vaccinations against bacterial meningitis from 8:00 - 11:00 A.M. and from 1:00 - 4:00 P.M.  The Health Department is able to offer meningitis vaccines at a reduced cost of $10.00 to children ages 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, and 18.  The program pays for these age groups to receive the vaccine because they are most at risk of contracting the bacteria which can cause brain damage, seizures, hearing loss, amputation, or even death.  Eligible children should bring their shot records and must be accompanied by a parent if they are under the age of 18.  Vaccines for all other ages are $100.00.  Contact the Centennial school nurse if you have questions about this vaccine.
DINNER THEATER
Level II Spanish students will be performing the 5th Annual Dinner Theater Celebration on Thursday, April 26, 2007, starting at 6:30 P.M.  Students will turn common fairy tales and children’s books into fun and exciting skits.  Anyone interested in coming is welcome to attend.  For more information and to make dinner arrangements, please contact Jill Hollandsworth Pomroy, Spanish teacher.

TRACK SEASON - A SIGN OF SPRING
Track season for grades 6 - 8 begins April 2, 2007, and the last meet is on May 11.  It’s a very short season.  Practice is daily from 2:45 - 4:15 and beginners are welcome.  There is a parent meeting scheduled for April 11 at 5:15 in the gymnasium.  Contact Mr. Wilcox or Mr. Schanck if you have questions!

CENTENNIAL TRACK AND FIELD TEAM FUND RAISER
The Centennial Eagle Track Team is sponsoring a “Cardio-thon Fund Raiser” that will be conducted April 2, 2007 - April 19, 2007.  The purpose of this fund raiser is to raise funds for new uniforms and Eagle “Track Stars” of the Week recognition t-shirts.  Students will seek pledges for mileage (running or walking) for the distance walked/run for a 2 hour time period.  The culminating event will take place on April 16, 2007, on the Centennial football field from 3:00 - 5:00 P.M. (weather permitting.) The alternate date is April 23, 2007, if the weather doesn’t cooperate.  Water and nutritious snacks will be provided and stretching before the event will be required.  Families may participate with their track students for a healthy family event.  Students are not to go door to door to solicit pledges.  Join the fun and exercise!

ALL SCHOOL TALENT SHOW!
The National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring an All School Talent Show to be held on April 19, 2007, at 6:30 P.M. in the school cafeteria.  Tryouts will be held in the music rooms on April 11, 12, and 13.  Tryouts will begin at 2:45 and will last until 4:00.  All grades (6-9) are encouraged to participate.  Individual and group performances are welcome.  Students should contact their English teacher, the office, or Mrs. Greer to receive an audition form.  The deadline for audition forms is April 10, 2007.

9th GRADE ACADEMIC GOAL CONFERENCES
The principals and instructional facilitators met individually with each 9th grader on March 21 - 22 to go over current grades and to review last year’s PAWS results to set goals and prepare for the upcoming testing window.

WELCOME MR. DEVER
Brian Dever is Centennial’s new campus supervisor.  He comes to us from Frontier Middle School.  Mr. Dever enjoys middle school students and he is working hard to supervise students.  Student and staff safety are at the top of the list when it comes to Mr. Dever’s responsibilities.  If you have questions regarding safety or student behavior, contact Mr. Dever, campus supervisor, or Mr. Schulte, administrative manager.

ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN
Evansville academic interventionist, Chris Carruth, is working on her administrative internship at Centennial through the end of March.  She has been working closely with the principals, the administrative manager, the campus supervisor, and office staff to learn about administration and school leadership.  She is visiting classrooms, working with students, attending staffing meetings, academic goal conferencing with 9th graders, attending CJHS Committee and Team meetings, and learning all she can during her three weeks with middle level students!

MATH MATTERS
Students who are struggling with math often need skill remediation in the area of number operations and concepts.  Practice in this area strengthens a student’s ability to handle higher level math.  Have your child practice the following:
•fractions
•decimals
        -compute, simplify,                     convert, round
•place value
-read and write decimals                to the thousandths in                    word and standard form
• measurement
        inches
        mils
•adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing - including decimals
•factors, multiples, powers
•working with money
•justifying/explaining (in writing) how to arrive at an answer
Help by asking the following math questions about how to complete a specific math task.  Ask how to complete the task:
•Find the area of a square.
(Multiply the length of a side by itself and express in square units.)
•Convert minutes to seconds.
(Multiply by 60.)
•Find the perimeter of a figure.
(Add all the sides.)
•Find the circumference of a cylinder when the diameter is known.
(Multiply the diameter by 3.14.)
•Find an equivalent fraction for a given fraction.
(Multiply the denominator and the numerator by the same number.)
•Convert feet to inches.
(Multiply by 12.)

PARENT INVOLVEMENT LUNCHEON
DATE CHANGE!
Due to the upcoming spring holiday and conflicts the following week, the Parent Involvement Luncheon will be held on Thursday,  April 19, 2007.  Please mark your calendar for 12:00 on 4/19/07.

SPRING BREAK
Spring Break is just around the corner!  School is not in session on Thursday, April 5; Friday, April 6; and Monday, April 9!  Enjoy your time with your family!

PHYSICAL FITNESS
We listened and we value your input!  Each student in grades 6 - 9 will receive a full year of P.E. next year.  Due to an increase in our enrollment for 2007-2008, we will be able to add staff so that each child has P.E. every day  throughout the year.  Health units and common assessments are included in the P.E. curriculum.   Physical education classes will be part of the CORE rotation, so students will still have elective opportunities during the elective/exploratory blocks.

BULLYING IS NOT OKAY
Thanks to parents and students who have reported incidents of bullying.  Please continue to report problems to principals, the administrative manager, and the campus supervisor.

INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITATORS
Instructional Facilitators continue to work hard with the Centennial staff to promote embedded professional learning and growth.  They work with teachers in three different venues:  individual, small group, and large group.  Small group work takes place with departments, teams, and clusters of teachers.  Large group work takes place through monthly Faculty/Staff Development Meetings and other scheduled Professional Days.  Instructional Facilitators attend ongoing trainings throughout the year to stay current with recent research, best practice, and sound instructional strategies.  They are expected to share and guide others while maintaining a focus on school improvement goals.  The Instructional Facilitators also work with the School Improvement Team to assess, collect, and review student achievement data to guide instruction to meet student learning needs.  They use the school goals as the focus for modeling and coaching.  The purpose of the work is always targeted to student learning and student achievement.

LAST BLAST
The WINGS ECORE Team is planning Centennial’s annual Last Blast for the afternoon of the last day of school.  If you would like to volunteer time to work refreshment stands, supervise activity areas, or make donations to go toward the large inflatable activities, contact Pam Faulkner in the main office.  She will keep a list of names of volunteers for the WINGS Team and she will collect donations for inflatables.  This is a great send off for summer !  It’s a time for students to say goodbye to teachers and friends as they sign yearbooks and have fun in the sun.
