NEW      (11/26/2007)   Roger Farr's Think Aloud Progressions for better reading preparation
Roger Farr, noted reading expert, is the source for the Purposes for reading which influenced the reading skills measured on the PAWS.  This link will take you to a word document online, detailing a classroom protocol for reading instruction.

PAWS or Proficiency Assessment for Wyoming Students is the official Wyoming statewide assessment(Wyoming Department of  Education PAWS site  http://www.k12.wy.us/SAA/PAWS/ ).  This test is administered to all 3-8 and 11 grade students in the content areas of reading, math and writing.  Science will be administered to all 4th, 8th and 11th grade students beginning with a field test in April 2007 and an official season in 2008.
The test is available for formative use in January and then again officially in April.  The tests consists of online multiple choice items and printed test booklets for short answer and extended writing sections.
Students working on expanded standards under and IEP(Individualized Education Plan) are administered the PAWS ALT or alternative statewide test(Wyoming Department of  Education PAWS ALT site  http://www.k12.wy.us/SAA/Paws/paws_alt.htm ).
Student performance is reported as rapidly following the completion of testing as possible.

Determinations of Adequate Yearly Progress are made for each school and district in the state based on PAWS scores (Wyoming Department of  Education Adequate Yearly Progress Report  http://www.k12.wy.us/SAA/state_results.asp  ).

The Natrona County School District Office of Assessment and Research has highlighted two priorities to increase student success on PAWS.
                1.  Align what students learn with what is tested.
The Wyoming Department of Education has created Assessment Descriptors for each of the tested content areas of PAWS.  All district educators are encouraged to review any or all of these Assessment Descriptors.
These are organized into  content areas.
                                        Reading
                                        Math
                                        Writing
                                        Science
                2.  Familiarize every student with their test data to set goals for growth.
The Office of Assessment and Research maintains a local database with all student test scores collected in a profile.
